Cross-pollination Day at Gdynia, Poland

On April 15th and 16th, we had the pleasure of hosting SPINE (Smart Public Transport Initiatives for Climate-Neutral Cities in Europe) project partners from Bologna, Valladolid, and Zilina in Gdynia.

This was an intensive and inspiring meeting, during which we exchanged experiences from the project’s planning, implementation, and monitoring processes.

The first day began with a brief overview of mobility and transport in Gdynia and the city’s activities under the SPINE project. We then focused on practical solutions already in place in the city, presenting a system of parking space occupancy sensors. The smart parking system implemented in Gdynia is based on a network of 100 parking space sensors that monitor the availability of parking spaces in the urban environment in real time. The system processes the data and makes it available in various forms to city operators – to monitor parking occupancy – to optimize traffic management. The system is part of a broader approach to urban mobility management (smart city), integrating parking data with other transport components, such as public transport and multimodal infrastructure. We also presented our current efforts to improve public transport efficiency – implemented bus lanes and targeted changes to traffic organization and road geometry to improve travel times. We also presented plans for the development of the bus lane network and a draft working document on prioritizing public transport in urban traffic, as well as the action plan for 20216-2030.

On the second day, participants had the opportunity to learn about multimodal mobility solutions – from a presentation of the Gdynia Główna transport hub, a closer look at the analysis of a transport model – macro and micro simulations, to a discussion of experiences from individual cities. During a walk through Gdynia city center, we discussed the operation of the transfer hub in practice.

In addition, guests visited the bus transport company (Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacji Autobusowej), which they reached by electric bus “SPINE.” Modern charging infrastructure and a vehicle traffic management system were demonstrated on-site.

An additional, special moment during the walk through the city center was the sight of the “Dar Młodzieży” ship leaving the port.
