Climate Mission: Bologna Among the 20 Cities Recognized for Efforts Toward Climate Neutrality

The European Union’s Climate Mission has awarded 20 new cities the Climate Mission Label for their efforts toward climate neutrality. Among them is Bologna, now part of a group that includes a total of 54 cities. The city’s Councilor for Climate Transition and Climate Mission accepted the recognition during a ceremony at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on October 22.

The Climate Mission Label acknowledges the quality of the Climate City Contract, which guides Bologna’s efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, as well as its initiatives to mobilize public and private resources for this goal. Alongside Bologna, other recognized cities include Bergamo, Milan, Prato, Turin, Münster, Porto, Bucharest, and Ljubljana. Among the 54 cities already in the group are Parma and Florence, as well as Madrid, Stockholm, Thessaloniki, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Lyon.

This recognition facilitates access to new resources and financial tools, such as the Climate City Capital Hub launched by the Climate Mission in June 2024 to activate private capital and the European Investment Bank’s concessional funds totaling €2 billion.

The Climate Mission’s objective is to support cities in achieving climate neutrality by 2030, ahead of the EU-wide 2050 target.

Cities account for over 70% of global emissions and consume more than 65% of energy.
