SPINE in Bologna: sustainable mobility meets culture at the 2025 Pop-up Exhibition

From 18 to 22 September 2025, the city of Bologna hosted the SPINE pop-up exhibition, an initiative of the European project SPINE – Smart Public Transport Initiatives for Climate-Neutral Cities in Europe, held within the official programme of the EU Mobility Week 2025.

The event provided an important opportunity to engage citizens, institutions and local stakeholders, with the aim of raising awareness of innovative, sustainable and inclusive urban mobility solutions developed within the SPINE project.

The pop-up exhibition was structured around two main events.
The first was “Dolcemente viaggiare (Travelling Sweetly)”, a musical performance hosted at the Ex.Dynamo bike station. Through music and storytelling, the performance encouraged reflection on the social and symbolic value of travelling and on the evolution of transport modes over time, highlighting their environmental and cultural implications.

The second key moment was the exhibition on SPINE Mobility Hubs, hosted at the FILLA Auditorium in Montagnola Park. The exhibition presented the co-creation journey behind the development of the Mobility Hubs in Casteldebole, Corticella and Mazzini, illustrating the transition from initial ideas to ongoing implementation. The SPINE Mobility Hubs are conceived as multifunctional urban nodes, integrating different transport services while improving accessibility, digital information and the overall user experience.

Throughout the week, SPINE was also present at the Mobility Village, with an institutional booth and dedicated information materials. Citizens were invited to share their views through questionnaires, whose results showed a strongly positive perception of the project and its potential to enhance liveability and sustainable mobility in the city.

Overall, the Bologna pop-up exhibition strengthened cooperation among local SPINE partners and demonstrated how participatory approaches and alternative communication tools, including arts and culture, can effectively engage citizens in the transition towards more sustainable mobility systems.
